Eucomis
Botanical Information:
Eucomis is a deciduous summer growing bulb. The bulbs give rise to wavy-edged leaves. The flower stem consist of a stout stalk covered with starry flowers and a tuft of leaf-like bracts at the tip. Flowers range between green, white, pink and yellowish.
The plant size varies between large and miniature varieties.
Horticultural Use:
Plants prefer to grow in a rich soil, in full sun or partial shade. They are frost hardy and will tolerate winter rainfall. Propagation is by offsets, seed, leaf cuttings and tissue culture. Plants can be sold as dry bulbs or pot plants. Eucomis is very good garden plants, especially when planted en masse. Smaller varieties make good pot plants. The flowers can also be used as cut flowers.
