Canna lily
Botanical Information:
The Canna belongs to the genus Cannaceae, consisting of some 50 species. Even though they are native to the tropical parts of South America and Asia one exception is found in Florida. It is a highly adaptable genus and grows wherever the temperatures are warm and where they have sufficient water. It is mainly a rhizomatous group, with a few exceptions that are bifrous-rooted, but generally the common garden cultivars all have rootstocks which enable them to last for extended periods out of the soil.
Horticultural Use:
The Canna is a sought after plant in Europe and the USA. It has a tropical appeal to the colder regions because of their huge tropical leaves and quick growth, enabling them to grow and bloom in the short summers of the colder countries. It is also sought after for its attractive foliage which occurs in green, red, bronze or variegated. It is sold as a container grown product or as a dry bulb.
Flowering Time:
